Trees can become infected with a variety of diseases, which can become fatal if left untreated. Some diseases and infestations can be treated successfully only if the treatment begins promptly, so contact us right away if you suspect a problem. We can diagnose the problem, assess the damage already done, and discuss treatment options. Susceptibility varies widely by species, a few of the most common are listed below.

 

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) – EAB is a beetle that bores through the tree, rapidly compromising the structural integrity. If you have an untreated ash tree, you should begin treatment as soon as possible, whether or not there are symptoms. EAB can be treated in the early stages, but it is best to prevent infestation in the first place. Trees in an advanced state of infestation cannot be treated and should be removed as soon as possible. The longer they are left alone, the more hazardous they become and the more complicated and expensive the removal will be. EAB is prevented/treated by a pesticide injection every two years.

 

Dutch Elm Disease (DED) - DED is a fungal disease that has devastated our American Elm population in the United States. The fungus is spread by the Elm Bark Beatle when they feed on the elm tree in the spring/early summer. DED kills the tree by clogging the vascular system and cutting off water and nutrients for the tree.  DED can be prevented by treating your Elm with a fungicide injected into the tree every 3 years.

 

Two-Line Chestnut Borer (TLCB) -Two-Line Chestnut borer is a native borer that feeds on the vascular tissue of stressed oak trees. Oak trees experiencing drought are more susceptible. If the tree starts to show decline in the upper canopy you will need to treat it with a systemic insecticide to kill the borer and reduce further decline. Proper mulching and watering can prevent TLCB from becoming a problem in the first place.
